Peta Todd: objective beautyWe often hear that the admiration of natural beauty and the movement against objective definitions of beauty are part of a healthy rebellion against the too-stringent standards our society has set for female beauty. "All women are beautiful", we hear, "and we want to see all body types appreciated in the media and culture". But this movement is not healthy, and it is not pro-beauty at all. Yes, all women are beautiful, but only because all women possess at least a couple of characteristics that make women beautiful: happiness, long hair, confidence, nice smile, intelligence, pretty eyes, etc. The modern movement against objective beauty would have us believe women are only truly beautiful when they do not possess or project any such objective values. The fact that we see different kinds of women being portrayed as beautiful today is not a rebellion against objective beauty but rather the opposite: it's absolute proof of how even the plainest woman can be beautiful when she possesses even one characteristic of objective beauty. Rather than rebel against the fact that beauty is an objective truth, women should relish this fact, and celebrate it to the fullest, since it is only by possessing or projecting objective values that any woman can be beautiful at all.
